NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming, which is a bit of a mouthful!
It means however that we have a mind-body system which we can programme.
The Neuro part refers to our neurology - our nervous systems that enable us to live, breathe, think and function. We experience the world through our five senses, sight, hearing, smell, taste and feeling (internal and external - touch). We make sense of the information we receive in this way, and act on it.
Linguistic, refers to the symbol systems that run the neurology. The language we use demonstrates at a deep subconscious level what is going on inside us, and it shapes as well as reflects our experience of the world. We use language in thought as well as in speech so it makes a difference if we tell ourselves off or praise ourselves.
Programming refers to ways we can choose to organise our ideas, our sequences of repetitive behaviour and actions to produce results. In order to save time and effort in checking out each piece of information that we receive we run automatic programmes. For example if we had to work out how to use a door handle each time we encountered one it could take a long time to move around the house. We automatically pull over when a police car or ambulance approaches with its siren sounding, we stop at red traffic lights and to extend the driving analogy a bit further we can drive along chatting to a friend and would be hard pressed to say when we last used second gear.
The big question is are the programmes we have running still useful?
