Counselling may be concerned with developmental issues, addressing and resolving specific problems, making decisions, coping with crisis, developing personal insight and knowledge, working through feelings of inner conflict or improving relationships with others. People usually come to counselling because of feelings or emotions causing pain and anxiety and they are seeking resolution.
The terms counselling and psychotherapy are frequently used interchangeably and there is little difference. Both are conversations which involve listening and talking to facilitate understanding and resolution. The differences lie in approach. There are many theories providing conceptual frameworks (see Perspectives on this website for the main ones). Research has shown that some approaches are more useful than others for dealing with specific conditions. Many counsellors therefore work with an eclectic perspective. It may be brief, medium-term or long-term depending on your requirements.
